Engineers Canada has released its 2024 National Membership Report. The annual report gathers information on the provincial and territorial engineering regulators’ membership, providing information about the growth and composition of the engineering profession in Canada. This year’s report presents data from the 2023 calendar year.
Overall, there was a slight increase in membership in the engineering profession in 2023, with an additional 4,337 members since 2022 to a total of 323,360 members. This represents a 1.4 per cent growth in the profession between 2022 and 2023. The largest increase in membership numbers was seen in Quebec (1,991 more members).
While women continue to be underrepresented in the engineering profession, the percentage of female-identifying engineering members continued to increase in 2023. Female-identifying members represented 15.4 per cent of overall membership in 2023, an increase from 15.0 per cent in 2022. The largest increase between 2022 and 2023 was seen in British Columbia, with growth from 14.8 per cent in 2022 to 15.8 per cent in 2023. Sex identifiers have historically been limited to “male” and “female” in the survey of national membership, and in the surveys by many of our provincial and territorial regulators of their membership. We use “female-identifying” to describe participants who selected female, and “male-identifying” to describe participants who selected male, to be as literal as possible, to limit the assumptions between sex and gender identifiers, and to acknowledge the gender diversity that exists within these sex identities.
Female-identifying engineers accounted for 18.7 per cent of newly licensed engineers in Canada in 2023, a change from 20.2 per cent in 2022. The percentage of female-identifying engineers-in-training (EITs) remained the same, at 21.6 per cent. The percentage of female-identifying engineering student members also saw an increase in 2023 to 25 per cent, from 24.3 per cent in 2022.
