From April 19 to 25, organizations across the country will be celebrating National Volunteer Week, a time to recognize the people whose generosity, expertise, and commitment strengthen our communities. This year’s theme, Ignite Volunteerism, shines a light on the many ways individuals are inspired to reconnect with their communities through acts of service, civic engagement, and mutual support.

National Volunteer Week 2026 carries added significance, as the United Nations has proclaimed 2026 the International Year of Volunteers for Sustainable Development. This global recognition highlights the essential role volunteers play in advancing inclusive, resilient, and sustainable societies, both locally and around the world.

Volunteers are at the heart of Engineers Canada’s work. All across the country, hundreds of dedicated volunteers contribute their time, knowledge, and lived experience to help advance the engineering profession and serve the public interest. Their efforts support our mission of strengthening engineering regulation, fostering collaboration across jurisdictions, and helping the profession respond to evolving societal and technical challenges.

Volunteers support Engineers Canada in many ways: accrediting undergraduate engineering programs, serving on boards and committees, contributing to publications and position statements, supporting outreach and engagement, championing equity, diversity, and inclusion, and sharing expertise that informs decision-making across the organization. Each contribution plays an important role in shaping the future of engineering in Canada.

The Ignite Volunteerism theme also encourages people from all backgrounds to “Find Your Thing”—to discover meaningful ways to contribute that reflect their interests, skills, and passions. Our volunteers embody this spirit, showing how personal commitment can lead to collective impact and help build stronger, more connected communities.

As we prepare to celebrate National Volunteer Week, we extend our sincere thanks to every Engineers Canada volunteer. Your dedication ignites progress within our organization and across the profession. During every week of the year, your contributions help create a more resilient, inclusive, and sustainable future for engineering in Canada.
