Engineers Canada hosted its annual Contact Day on Parliament Hill on March 21, 2016 as part of its National Engineering Month activities.

Members of the Bridging Government and Engineers Committee, an engineering student and Engineers Canada staff meet with 40 Members of Parliament from three parties and representing nine provinces and territories. Engineers Canada has another 10 meetings scheduled with MPs between now and the end of April, with those whose schedule did not permit to meet on March 21.

The meetings were a way of introducing Engineers Canada to many of the new MPs, as well as to cover a number of the engineering profession’s government relations priorities. We discussed climate-resilient infrastructure, diversity in the engineering profession, National Engineering Month celebrations, as well as the important role that engineers play in safeguarding the environment, the economy and Canadians.

Members of Parliament were very receptive to Engineers Canada’s messaging and priorities. The overall theme of the feedback participants received was that parliamentarians can see how Engineer Canada is a wonderful resource to help facilitate their job of evidence based decision making and connect with the profession for expertise on a variety of subjects.

The Engineers Canada group met with three ministers’ offices, four parliamentary secretaries, several chairs and vice-chairs of House of Commons Standing Committees and critics from both opposition parties. A full list of the parliamentarians that Engineers Canada met with can be found below, or browse through a photo gallery of the meetings.
