Engineers Canada is pleased to announce the appointment of two new Vice-Presidents. Effective November 2, Jeanette Southwood, M.A.Sc., P.Eng., FEC, FCAE, QPESA, QPRA, will join our team as Vice-President, Strategy and Partnerships. Effective immediately, Colin Brown, PMP, CPC, ELI-MP will assume the role of Vice-President, Operations and Projects.

Engineers Canada is pleased to announce the appointment of two new Vice-Presidents. Effective November 2, Jeanette Southwood, M.A.Sc., P.Eng., FEC, FCAE, QPESA, QPRA, will join our team as Vice-President, Strategy and Partnerships. Effective immediately, Colin Brown, PMP, CPC, ELI-MP will assume the role of Vice-President, Operations and Projects.

These two appointments reflect the restructuring of Engineers Canada into three divisions: Regulatory Affairs, Strategy and Partnerships, and Operations and Projects. Kathryn Sutherland, FEC, P.Eng., LL.B., continues as the Vice-President, Regulatory Affairs. This approach will enable us to achieve goals that focus on supporting strong regulators and building a respected profession.

Ms. Southwood will lead a team of professionals focussing on the future of the profession and strategies and partnerships to sustain and grow the profession for the continued benefit of society. Staff reporting to Jeanette manage public affairs, government relations, engineering and public policy, affinity and insurance programs, community engagement, research, and communications.

Mr. Brown leads a team of professionals who manage operations and provide business enablers. The portfolio includes the delivery of major projects, change management, business and operational planning, program and project tracking, continuous improvement of processes, finance, administration, information services, and events.

Ms. Sutherland leads a team of professionals who ensure a current framework, standards, practices and systems and transfer knowledge to facilitate regulatory excellence to the regulators. Staff reporting to Kathryn manage accreditation, qualifications, Framework for Regulation, assessments, discipline and enforcement, legal, and governance. Ms. Sutherland is the Secretary to the Accreditation Board, Qualifications Board, and the Governance Committee.

Backgrounds

Jeanette Southwood, M.A.Sc., P.Eng., FEC, FCAE, QPESA, QPRA
Vice-President, Strategy and Partnerships

Ms. Southwood is an accomplished professional with over 20 years of experience in the engineering consulting sector. Most recently, she was the Leader of Golder Associates’ largest Canadian sector, Urban Development & Infrastructure, and the Global Sustainable Cities teams. In her early career, Jeanette received the Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO) Young Engineer Medal. This medal honours a young engineer who has demonstrated exceptional achievements and excellence, not only in work but also in service to the community and the profession. A dedicated leader in her volunteer work, she has served on Boards as well as on committees of local, provincial and national organizations. She is now a Fellow of Engineers Canada, and a recipient of the Province of Ontario’s “Leading Women Building Communities Award”. She was honoured as one of Canada’s Clean50 2014 for her work and dedication to sustainable development, leading change, championing innovation and changing our world for the better. In 2014, she was also inducted as a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering which recognizes engineers contributing in exemplary ways towards their disciplinary fields and the wider community.

In November, Jeanette will be recognized with WXN Canada’s Most Powerful Women: Top 100 Award and the Ontario Professional Engineers Awards Engineering Medal – Engineering Excellence.

Jeanette received a B.A.Sc., Chemical Engineering, and a M.A.Sc., Chemical and Environmental Engineering from the University of Toronto. She is a professional engineer (Ontario), Fellow of Engineers Canada, and a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering.

Colin Brown, PMP, CPC, ELI-MP
Vice-President, Operations and Projects

Mr. Brown previously held the position of Practice Lead, Business Transformation and Project Management Office at Engineers Canada. He is also a Certified Professional Coach specializing in leadership. During his time with Engineers Canada, he has acted as a mentor and coach to staff at all levels.

In his previous roles, Colin established a proven track record in various business sectors, providing the highest levels of excellence in leadership, transformation change, and customer service. Prior to joining Engineers Canada, Colin held the position of Vice-President, Centre for Business Excellence & Project Management Office at Alterna Savings, Ontario’s second largest Credit Union. In that role, he had overall responsibility for the complete portfolio of change projects within the organization. The portfolio (typically about 30 projects) included new product launches, business process improvements, technology infrastructure upgrades, facilities, technology application upgrades and regulatory changes. Colin also had responsibility for the delivery of change projects and management of the change-related risk. He led the ongoing development and improvement of the corporate project management methodology, business process methodology and business analysis practice.

Colin served on the Board of Governors for Excellence Canada, a not-for-profit dedicated to advancing organizational performance across Canada.

Kathryn Sutherland, FEC, P.Eng., LL.B.
Vice-President, Regulatory Affairs

Ms. Sutherland continues in her current role. Previously, she was counsel at Engineers Canada. Prior to joining us, Kathryn provided legal services to clients across Ontario, primarily engineers and construction companies. She is an active volunteer with Canadian Network of Agencies for Regulation, Canadian Engineering Memorial Foundation, chair of PEO’s Registration and Fees Mediation Committees, a member of PEO’s National Framework Task Force and a member of the Executive of the PEO’s Ottawa Chapter. Kathryn received her B.A.Sc. (Civil Engineering) and Baccalaureate of Laws from the University of Ottawa. She is also a Registered Trade-Mark Agent. Kathryn is a professional engineer (Ontario) and a Fellow of Engineers Canada. Kathy is also a Warden of the Ritual of the Calling of an Engineer.
