Engineers PEI has announced that they will now accept Washington Accord degrees in the same way as they accept Engineers Canada Accreditation Board degrees, becoming only the second engineering regulator in Canada to do.
The Engineers PEI Council decided at their meeting on November 9, 2015 that they will accept Washington Accord degrees in the same way as Engineers Canada Accreditation Board degrees. This brings the province into compliance with the intention of the Washington Accord.
Engineers PEI joins APEGBC as the second Canadian engineering regulator to take this step.
The Washington Accord, signed in 1989, is an international agreement among those responsible for accrediting engineering degree programs. It recognizes the substantial equivalency of programs accredited by those bodies and recommends that graduates of programs accredited by any of the signatories to the Accord be recognized by the others as having met the academic requirements for entry to the practice of engineering.
Engineers Canada was one of the six founding members of the Washington Accord in 1989. The signatories conduct a peer review process and must unanimously authorize ongoing status. In 2015, Engineers Canada’s status was extended for an additional six years.
Working with each of the provincial and territorial engineering regulators to accept Washington Accord degrees as equivalent has been a key priority of Engineers Canada since signing the accord and we are hopeful other regulators will follow suit.
