After nine previous successful offerings and more than 10,000 participants worldwide, Engineers Canada and Polytechnique Montréal have opened registration for a tenth offering of their free online course, Sustainability in Practice. Register here.

Last year, the course was updated and improved with two new case studies from the green building sector, and with updated climate change and other sustainability data.

The massive open online course is offered in both English and French and uses real-life case studies from across Canada to demonstrate the practical application of Engineers Canada’s 10 principles of sustainable development and environmental stewardship for engineers. The course is completed entirely online and can be completed at each participant’s own pace.

“This course exceeded my expectations, and I genuinely feel that I can take the knowledge gained here and immediately apply it,” said Steve Jones-Duch of Regina, SK, who took a previous edition of the course.

Flavia Visentin of Montreal, QC, added “The case studies were very interesting, and helped grasp the concept of sustainable development as applied in reality.”

Sustainability in Practice originally launched in 2018, and since then, has seen participants who are engineers and non-engineers alike, and who work in a range of industries, including in consulting engineering, government, education, construction, manufacturing, education, oil and gas, renewable resources, utilities, mining, and non-governmental organizations.

April Waddell of Ottawa, ON, noted that “As a consulting engineer, I found many useful examples where I can help make a difference in my own work.”

Reviews of previous editions of the course have shown that an overwhelming majority of participants attest to the high quality of the training content and agree that what they learned would be useful to them in their professional and personal life. More than 95 per cent of participants have said that they would recommend the course to a colleague or friend.

“The course content is very rich and complemented by very useful links. The instructors apply a multidisciplinary approach, and their messages are clear and well structured,” said Fatima Gharib, of Casablanca, Morrocco.

The tenth edition of Sustainability in Practice begins October 23, 2024. Participants have until December 13, 2024, to complete the course at their own pace. An optional Certificate of Completion is available following successful completion of the course at a cost of about C$100.
