UNESCO and WomEng have together committed to reach one million girls through STEM education and awareness initiatives in at least 10 regions in the next 10 years.

The campaign was launched on  March 13, 2017, at a side event during the 61st edition of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) at United Nations headquarters in New York, NY. The side event, entitled “Women’s Empowerment in the Engineering World,” featured a roundtable of representatives from academia, industry, NGOs and government.

Jeanette M. Southwood, M.A.Sc., FCAE, FEC, P.Eng., Vice-President of Strategy and Partnerships, represented Engineers Canada at the roundtable event, which featured remarks from the UNESCO Director-General, the Executive Director  of UN Women, representatives from Intel Corporation, the World Federation of Engineering Organizations, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers and DiscoverE.

WomEng, a non-profit, volunteer organization aims to attract, develop and nurture the next generation of women engineering leaders. They have partnered with UNESCO on the One Million Girls in STEM Campaign, which will be achieved through strategic global partnerships.
