Georges Kaddoum’s pioneering research on wireless communications and network security is helping organizations and companies worldwide address wicked communications challenges.
An electrical engineering professor at École de technologie supérieure (ÉTS) in Montréal and Canada Research Chair in Unlocking the Power of IoT 6G-Networks, Kaddoum’s research in wireless communications (with a particular focus on 6G technologies) and resource management has yielded innovative solutions that have influenced the evolution of wireless technologies and improved their function and efficiency.
He partnered with Ultra TCS and ÉTS to found the Resilient Machine Learning Institute (ReMI), whose research has revolutionized intelligent tactical wireless networks. “Our mission is to create AI-driven tools and frameworks for tactical wireless networks to ensure fast deployment, robustness, adaptability, and trustworthiness in harsh environments or during natural disasters,” Kaddoum says.
He also collaborated with Ericsson Canada to develop an intelligent distributed security network for NFV-based 5G networks that made radio communications more secure and efficient, resulting in several publications and patents.
Hydro Québec drew on Kaddoum’s expertise to develop a modernized, resilient Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) network for their smart grid. The results: better monitoring and control, leading to energy efficiency, lower greenhouse gas emissions, and fewer power outages.
Mentorship is one of Kaddoum’s core values. He has proudly served as advisor and supporter for more than 40 PhD students, postdocs, and senior researchers. He says this work is essential to building a stronger, more inclusive research environment and talent base. “It's empowering the next generation to explore, to lead, and to innovate with confidence.”
He also believes strongly in the value of open, rigorous, and collaborative research, knowledge dissemination, critical thinking and diversity of opinion. He publishes extensively and volunteers as an editor for several journals published by the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE). “It's about building frameworks that others can learn from and improve upon,” he says.
Kaddoum is active in raising public awareness and understanding of engineering concepts, frequently giving interviews to media outlets on such diverse topics as wave jammers and 5G network security and promoting digital inclusivity for all.
