Beyond The Buzz: The Application of Nuclear Energy, EV’s & Smart Buildings

Join SWE Toronto for an enlightening evening during National Engineering Month as we explore the powerful intersection of nuclear energy, electric vehicles (EVs), and smart buildings in shaping Ontario’s clean energy future. As the province accelerates its transition to net-zero emissions, nuclear power remains the backbone of Ontario’s electricity grid, supplying over 50% of the province’s energy—a reliable and low-carbon source crucial for meeting rising electricity demands. Meanwhile, EV adoption is surging, with Ontario aiming to have 400,000 EVs on the road by 2030, supported by expanding charging infrastructure and government incentives. Smart building technology leverages intelligent systems to optimize real-time efficiency in energy conservation projects. Ontario's smart buildings initiative aims to monitor and control the mechanical, heating, cooling and lighting systems in federal buildings in order to lower energy costs, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and establish baseline data so building managers know if energy efficiency is improving.

Our event, Beyond The Buzz: The Application of Nuclear Energy, EV’s & Smart Buildings in Ontario, brings together industry leaders who are at the forefront of this transformation. Stephanie Smith, Senior Vice-President of Engineering at AtkinsRéalis, brings extensive expertise in the nuclear sector, overseeing critical engineering operations that support Ontario’s nuclear fleet, including refurbishments and new reactor designs. Cara Clairman, founder of Plug’n Drive, has played a pivotal role in advancing EV adoption across Canada, leveraging over 25 years in environmental and sustainability fields to educate consumers and advocate for cleaner transportation. Natalia Malafeeva, Head of Sustainability at Siemens, will speak about the role of smart building technology in driving sustainability and energy efficiency across Ontario.
