- In early January, University of Manitoba civil engineering professor Ahmed Shalaby wrote an opinion piece in which he reflected on the Humboldt crash and called for changes at the federal level to make Canadian roads safer. These include strengthening Transport Canada’s capacity to regulate motor vehicle and road safety programs, and empowering the Transportation Safety Board to investigate major road crashes. He reiterated these calls this week in the aftermath of the deadly bus crash in Ottawa.
- The Governor General announced the Canadians who will be invested into the Order of Canada, and the list included a number of engineers who are being recognized for their contributions to engineering. They include a past president of Engineers Canada, Digvir Jayas, and civil engineer Suzanne Lacasse.
- André Picard wrote in the Globe and Mail about increasing calls from medical groups for some type of national licence for medical professionals in Canada, to ease their ability to work in multiple provinces and territories. The growing chorus of voices argues that the current system of separate licensing requirements for physicians in each province and territory puts an administrative burden on physicians wishing to practise in other provinces and territories, creates barriers to patient care, and violates the Canadian Free Trade Agreement.
