Hamilton building collapse: A report shared recently at a Hamilton City Council committee meeting said staff acknowledge multiple contributing causes to the 2024 collapse of boarded-up heritage buildings in Hamilton’s Gore Park. But the report also said a consultant hired by the city to investigate the cause of the collapse found that an engineer retained by the property owner failed in their professional obligation to report the “critical condition” of the building to the city and the chief building official.
Iron ring: Dean of the University of Waterloo’s Faculty of Engineering, Mary Wells, recently marked the 100th anniversary of Canada’s iron ring tradition with alumni in Hong Kong during the Canadian Engineering Asia-Pacific Conference.
AI talent: The Canada Institute for Advanced Research and Canada’s three national artificial intelligence (AI) institutes warned the government last summer that amidst a global race for talent that has reached a “fever pitch,” Canada must act to retain its leadership in AI research.
