An awkwardly placed crosswalk button in Langford, BC. Toronto launches new measures to reduce design costs and speed up building permits. A new podcast from two consulting engineers. These were the most-read stories in the Daily Media Report from mid-July to mid-August.

Crosswalk: This article in Victoria News describes a new roundabout in Langford, BC, where two crosswalk signal buttons have been installed several steps off the sidewalk, awkwardly placed in the middle of flowerbeds. To activate the buttons, pedestrians must veer off the path and step into the landscaping – a nuisance for most, but a near-impossible task for those with mobility challenges.

Reducing design costs: Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow announced in July that the City of Toronto is rolling out a series of new initiatives aimed at reducing design costs and expediting the building permit process, particularly for homeowners looking to add secondary housing units such as garden and laneway suites.

Podcast: Michael Wrinch, CEO of Hedgehog Technologies, and Graham Lovely, partner at MCW Group of Companies, have launched a podcast called Between Two Firms that will discuss the opportunities and challenges that today’s engineers face.
