Dr. Jeff Pieper from the University of Calgary has been named the chair of the Canadian Engineering Accreditation Board (CEAB). The CEAB is an Engineers Canada committee, that has accredited all engineering programs in Canada since 1965, which now includes more than 300 programs at 44 post-secondary institutions. The CEAB looks at the kind of education students are receiving, the quality of their experiences, and the environment for teaching and learning.  

A call to action from OSPE to address severe weather events in Ontario. The Ontario Society of Professional Engineers (OSPE) put out a statement that they are increasingly alarmed by the rise in severe weather events, such as tornadoes and floods, that are impacting communities across the province. These occurrences reflect the broader effects of climate change being faced in Ontario. Previous studies have revealed a significant infrastructure gap that must be addressed to mitigate the impacts of climate change-related weather events. To this end, OSPE presented a series of actionable recommendations to the Ontario provincial government in 2017, aimed at enhancing our resilience to severe weather. Some of these recommendations were accepted.  

Closing the gender gap for women in engineering. Canadian Consulting Engineer hosted its second annual Advance Women in Engineering virtual summit, in advance of International Women in Engineering Day (INWED) on June 23, and the event drew more than 180 live viewers. This year’s expanded event focused on breaking down barriers to inclusion, enhancing educational opportunities, supporting mental health in the workplace, and achieving parity in governance.
