Engineers and Geoscientists BC names steering committee for new advocacy body. Engineers warn that the wrong supply mix could increase Ontario electricity costs. UBC engineering researchers investigate new use for plastic bottles. These were the most-read stories in the Daily Media Report in late July.

Steering committee: Engineers and Geoscientists BC has appointed nine individuals to sit on a steering committee for the new advocacy body for engineering and geoscience in BC. The steering committee will create a name for the advocacy body, identify the matrix of skills needed within the advocacy body’s board, create an Expression of Interest to begin the recruitment process, and then select the inaugural board.

Ontario electricity costs: A study from the Ontario Society of Professional Engineers (OSPE) suggests that the wrong supply mix to meet the province’s net-zero emissions goal would increase electricity costs to more than 220% of current rates.

Plastic bottles: For years, unrecycled plastic bottles have been dumped in landfills. Now, thanks to new research from UBC Okanagan School of Engineering, those bottles may have a second life in that landfill stabilizing its earth walls.
