Engineers charged in relation to Welland condo collapses. Two professional engineers have been charged with endangering workers under Ontario’s Occupational Health and Safety Act, in relation to two partial collapses of Evertrust Developments’ Upper Vista Welland condo project early last year. The matter is currently before the court. The ministry issued 21 orders and requirements to Evertrust since the two collapses in February 2023.
Toronto condo owners facing massive special assessment. The owners of a North York condominium say they are facing a $70,000 special assessment to fix their building’s parking garage. They received a notice from the property management company that looks after the complex which said a possible repair to the building’s parking garage may require a $7 million loan to be taken by the condo or a special assessment of $70,000 each for about 100 unit holders. Engineers have advised the condo board water penetration is causing a serious structural risk.
Professional Engineers Government of Ontario to take strike action on October 8th. For the first time in its 35-year history, the Professional Engineers Government of Ontario (PEGO), the certified bargaining association representing Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors employed by the Ontario Public Service (OPS), will take legal strike action in response to 20 months without a contract or a fair offer by the Treasury Board of the Government of Ontario. This strike will begin on October 8th with PEGO members initiating a work-to-rule campaign. Subsequent escalation could include strategic withdrawals of labour by certain groups of employees in the PEGO bargaining unit for limited time periods.
