Engineers Canada representatives Kim Allen, FEC, P.Eng., Chief Executive Officer, Gérard Lachiver, FIC, ing., Chair of the Accreditation Board and Lynn Villeneuve, LL.B., Practice Lead, Accreditation, attended the midterm meetings of the International Engineering Alliance (IEA) May 31-June 3, 2016. Hosted by the Board of Engineers Malaysia and the Institution of Engineers Malaysia, the meetings were held in Kuala Lumpur.

Meeting delegates collaborated during nine workshops to share each other’s promising practices and improve the mutual recognition of engineering qualifications and professional competence. The mentoring of potential new provisional members was discussed, with the goal of eventually changing current rules and procedures to enable a more robust and engaging process when considering new members.

Delegates also reviewed China’s application for signatory status in the Washington Accord, represented by the China Association for Science and Technology (CAST). There was unanimous approval to admit CAST as a signatory, effective this year.

The IEA includes seven international agreements governing mutual recognition of engineering qualifications and professional competence. Engineers Canada was among the original signatories to Washington Accord (1989), the APEC Engineer Agreement (2000) and the Engineers Mobility Forum Agreement (1997).
