Contact Day may be over but Engineers Canada’s meetings with Members of Parliament are not slowing down. Engineers Canada’s Vice President of Strategy and Partnerships, Jeanette Southwood, M.A.Sc., FCAE, FEC, P.Eng., and Practice Lead, Government Relations, Eric Scharf, have continued to meet with MPs throughout April.
On April 11, Southwood and Scharf met first with Marco Mendicino, Member for Eglinton—Lawrence, ON, and member of the Standing Committee on Public Safety and National Security, to introduce him to Engineers Canada and how we can assist the government through our network of volunteers and expertise. The second meeting of the day was with the Honourable Dr. Hedy Fry, Member for Vancouver Centre, BC, to discuss resilient infrastructure, labour market data, foreign credential recognition and improving diversity in the engineering profession.
Southwood and Scharf also met with Michael Levitt, Member for York Centre, ON, on April 14. The discussion focused on introducing Engineers Canada to Mr. Levitt and discussing the importance of climate resilient infrastructure and improving diversity in the engineering profession. The diversity file was of particular interest to Mr. Levitt as he is a member of the Liberal Party’s Women’s Caucus.
Engineers Canada, through the Bridging Government and Engineers Committee and staff, has met with more than 60 members of Parliament since the election in October 2015. The Committee and staff are showing no signs of slowing down and continue to schedule meetings in Ottawa and across the country.
