Ottawa, ON, December 5, 2014 — Twenty-five years ago, on December 6, 1989, 14 women were singled out for their gender and killed at École Polytechnique in Montréal. Each year, memorials and vigils are held across the country as part of a National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women so we do not ever forget this tragedy.

Engineers Canada will continue its efforts to promote engineering as a promising and worthwhile career choice to young women and to encourage the active participation and support for women throughout the profession so that engineering better reflects the diversity of Canadian society.

Engineers Canada is a longstanding supporter of the Canadian Engineering Memorial Foundation (CEMF) and their work since they formed in 1990 to promote women in engineering and future engineering leadership. CEMF is committed to creating a world where engineering meets the needs and challenges of society by engaging the skills and talents of both women and men alike. This year, Engineers Canada is making a donation to the Canadian Engineering Memorial Foundation’s Marie Carter Memorial Undergraduate Engineering Scholarship. The $5,000 scholarship, in memory of Marie Carter, FEC, P.Eng., our friend and past Chief Operating Officer of Engineers Canada, is awarded to Canadian women in engineering studies at the undergraduate level.

We encourage you to honour the women who lost their lives by participating in an event commemorating the anniversary in your community.

Engineers Canada is the national organization of the 12 provincial and territorial associations that regulate the practice of engineering in Canada and license the country's more than 270,000 members of the engineering profession.
