The Engineers Canada Board and other stakeholders were briefed on the Trans-Pacific Partnership—better known as the TPP—and its potential impact on the engineering profession at the Engineers Canada Board Meeting in Ottawa, Ont., on February 23, 2016.

The two representatives from Global Affairs Canada, Darren Smith, Director of the Services Trade Policy Division and Dany Carriere, Director of the Trans-Pacific Partnership Division and Deputy Chief Negotiator for the TPP, also urged engineers to provide feedback on the TPP, encouraging them to participate in the consultation process.

Smith and Carriere spoke about the 12-country trade agreement during the board meeting’s open forum. Their presentation featured background information on the TPP, the consultation process and a more in-depth look at the services section of the agreement.

Smith assured those in attendance that the TPP would not force engineering regulators to change their licensing process or lower their standards, including the requirement for Canadian experience. The TPP would however encourage the signing of mutual recognition agreements between participating countries.
