On June 23, on International Women in Engineering Day, Engineers Canada celebrates the accomplishments and contributions of women in engineering—and reaffirms our commitment to advancing gender equity across the profession.
Women continue to be underrepresented in engineering, and recent global pushback against equity, diversity, and inclusion efforts has only reinforced the need for continued, focused action. We continue to work with partners across the country to dismantle the systemic barriers that undermine women’s full and equitable participation in engineering.
Just last month, we were proud to see over 370 of these partners at our #30by30Conference. This strong turnout from engineering regulators, employers, and post-secondary institutions was a powerful demonstration that the engineering profession remains steadfast in our commitment to building a welcoming and inclusive profession for all.
At the conference, we emphasized both the need for systemic change and personal responsibility. Today, on #INWED25, we call on members of the engineering profession to take action:
- For decision-makers, commit to tangible equity actions in the workplace. Implement inclusive hiring and promotion practices. Mentor or sponsor women and gender-diverse individuals. Conduct gender pay audits and address inequities. Embed intersectional gender equity goals into performance reviews and organizational strategy.
- For all engineers, allyship from peers and leaders helps make invisible issues visible and fosters accountability. Speak up against bias. Call out discriminatory behaviour or policies. Share stories, data, and resources that promote awareness and education. Center and amplify the voices of women, particularly those from marginalized communities.
Today, and everyday, let’s lift up women in engineering and keep pushing for real, lasting change.
