In August, Engineers Canada’s Member Services Team paid a visit to Manulife’s REDLab in Kitchener, ON.

Located in downtown Kitchener’s Communitech Hub—a self-described clubhouse for the Waterloo Region tech community—REDLab is an innovation hub that works with all areas and business units within Manulife Canada to help promote and manage innovation. It serves as a bridge between Manulife and the start-up community, and focuses on:

  • Research: REDLab undergoes unique market research and combines this with real-time user experience and feedback to help assess different solutions, opportunities, and issues.
  • Design: REDLab is well-equipped to help add value to Manulife employees, customers, and stakeholders through successful and advanced UX and UI design capabilities.
  • Prototype: Using the research and design, REDLab works alongside Manulife employees and stakeholders to develop prototypes and pathways to production to help ensure that concepts, solutions, and designs are successful in their implementation, wherever that may be in the diverse organization.

Engineers Canada’s Vice President of Strategy and Partnerships, Jeanette M. Southwood, FCAE, FEC, LL.D. (h.c.), P.Eng., IntPE; Practice Lead, Member Services, Lorelei Scott, FEC (Hon.), CAE; and Member Services Associate Emily McParland visited REDLab to witness first-hand how it helps Manulife adapt to emerging global trends. This includes, for example, the ever-evolving ways in which consumers and organizations interact, as well as the ways in which organizations have and are shifting to focus on overall customer experience, including the way that products or services make customers feel.

Engineers Canada and Manulife are longstanding partners in offering term life and accident, health and dental care, disability income replacement, business overhead, critical illness, and retiree health and dental insurance programs to Canada’s professional engineers.

“We’re looking forward to leveraging the innovative insight and perspective of Manulife’s REDLab within our existing range of Manulife programs and potential new offerings in the future as well,” said Southwood. “Our visit to REDLab was extremely enlightening and exciting as Manulife’s focus on continuous innovation aligns with that of Engineers Canada.”
