Engineers Canada CEO Kim Allen to chair taskforce on industry growth

Engineers Canada CEO Kim Allen, MBA, FEC, FCAE, P.Eng., will chair the Canadian Leadership Taskforce on Industry Growth, one of three new taskforces recently created by the Information and Communications Technology Council (ICTC).

The taskforce—along with the taskforces on diversity and inclusion and education and skills—will work collectively to drive action to achieve, at a minimum, the objectives set out in ICTC’s national digital talent strategy to leverage skilled talent and realize Canada’s potential as a leader in the global digital economy.

“I look forward to collaborating with my colleagues and other stakeholders from across Canada,” said Allen. “Our industry growth taskforce has been mandated to establish actions that position Canada to more effectively attract and retain global digital talent, accelerate business growth, build labour mobility pathways, strengthen commercialization of R&D to enhance innovation and foster digital entrepreneurship and creativity.”

With momentum accelerating for increased innovation and job growth at the same time as the rise of digital skills shortages and global competition for talent, Canada will need a collective effort among industry, associations, academia, and policy-makers to leverage all talent sources. Through each taskforce and their broader group of stakeholders, ICTC will establish measures and provide regular reports on indicators, established actions and best practices.

“Engineers and engineering graduates contribute significantly to the digital economy and their work is integral to driving innovation forward,” said Allen. “I’m happy to represent our profession on this taskforce, bringing the contributions of engineers to the table, and also learning from others to the benefit of our profession and our economy.”

Engineers Canada and ICTC previously worked together on creating EngScape, an online labour market portal for engineers.

Allen will be joined on the industry growth taskforce by a group of senior leaders in industry and government that includes:

  • Namir Anani, President and CEO, ICTC
  • Rob Annan, Chief Research Officer, Mitacs
  • Alexandra (Alex) Clark, Director of Policy and Government Affairs, Shopify
  • Soumen Roy, Executive Director and Country Head – Canada, Tata Consultancy Services
  • Bill Tam, President and CEO, BCTIA
  • Kevin Wennekes, Vice-President, Research, CATAAlliance
  • Tanya Woods, Vice-President, Policy and Legal Affairs, Entertainment Software Association of Canada
